Biography

Petko Stoychov Karavelov (1843-1903) was a Bulgarian politician, one of the leaders of the Liberal Party and later founder and leader of the Democratic Party. Born in Koprivshtitsa, he studied in Moscow and helped draft the Tarnovo Constitution. He was repeatedly elected to parliament, served as chair of the National Assembly, held ministerial posts and was prime minister of Bulgaria four times. After the Regime of Full Powers he moved to Eastern Rumelia, where he was mayor of Plovdiv in 1883-1884. Later he again headed governments, including during the Unification and the Serbo-Bulgarian War.
