Biography

Stefan Georgiev Gevgalov (1882-1956) was a Bulgarian educator, pedagogue, journalist and briefly mayor of Plovdiv. Born in Kazanlak, he studied philosophy and pedagogy at Sofia University, Jena and Zurich, graduating from the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Zurich in 1910. From 1912 he lived in Plovdiv, worked as a teacher and for many years directed the teachers' cooperative Napred. As a Broad Socialist he was elected chair of a three-member commission and governed Plovdiv from 19 June to 3 October 1919, during the city's recovery from the First World War. Later he wrote for Uchitelsko delo and Yug, translated from German and remained active in Plovdiv cultural life.
