Biography

Georgi Todorov Krastev (1885-1980) was a lawyer, public figure and mayor of Plovdiv in 1935-1936. Born in Pazardzhik, he studied political economy in Graz and graduated in law from Sofia University in 1912. He took part in the wars for national unification, then practised law in Plovdiv and edited the newspapers Borba, Praporets, Sgovor and Zov. As mayor he began construction of the city market halls with refrigeration, created a municipal bus enterprise and municipal funeral service, organized urban-planning and sewerage offices, shaped Filipovo Park and supported the Sample Fair. From 1940 to 1944 he was a member of parliament and signed Dimitar Peshev's letter defending Bulgarian Jews.
