Hadrian's arch
The first structure here was a marble triumphal arch raised on the main road to Byzantium for Emperor Hadrian's visit in the 2nd century. In 172 Marcus Aurelius extended the fortifications against the Marcomanni, leaving the arch outside the new walls.

After the Gothic invasion of 251 the new Eastern Gate was built from the remains of Hadrian's arch — with one wide central and two narrower side entrances and watch towers. The approach was 13 m wide, paved with large syenite slabs, with 2.6 m sidewalks and a Corinthian colonnade on both sides; cart ruts are still visible on the paving.

The gate was repaired in the 4th and 5th centuries and was flanked by richly decorated porticoed buildings in the Corinthian style. The complex was uncovered in excavations in the 1970s and is today visible as a single ensemble.
