Kamenitza takes its name from a Plovdiv hill on which, in 1881, three Swiss entrepreneurs built a brewery — one of the oldest names in Bulgarian brewing.

The 1881 brewery
In 1881 three Swiss entrepreneurs built a brewery in Plovdiv on a hill called Kamenitza and took its name as their brand. There the first Bulgarian dark beer was brewed.

As early as the 1890s the beer won international awards at exhibitions in Brussels and Chicago. The enterprise was nationalised in 1947 and 1952, and after 1995 passed through several foreign owners.
