A 16th-century mosque

The mosque was built in the 16th century for the growing Muslim community of what was then Filibe, at the western edge of the city centre. Its dome has an outer diameter of 10 m, the building measures 25 by 15 m in the Ottoman-Turkish style, with a single minaret.

Earthquake and neglect

The 1928 earthquake brought down the minaret, and after 1944 the temple was closed through the communist period. The building was later used as a bar and restaurant, and in February 2016 the mosque and the neighbouring bath were set on fire.

Open again

In 2024 the building was acquired by the Plovdiv Mufti's Office, and in February 2025 the mosque opened its doors again for prayer.
