Kostaki Peev

Kostaki Peev Georgiev (1843-1920) was a Bulgarian public figure from Plovdiv and the city's first elected mayor. He studied at the Sts Cyril and Methodius diocesan school under Yoakim Gruev and, while still young, replaced his father in Plovdiv's Bulgarian religious community. In 1872 he helped found the Pchela mutual-aid society and financially supported the April Uprising, for which he was imprisoned in Tash Kapia. On 14 December 1878 he became Plovdiv's first elected mayor, and in 1884-1887 governed the city for a second time. After the Unification he joined the Provisional Government of Eastern Rumelia, helped found the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and served in the Regional Assembly and National Assembly.
