Biography

Atanas Kostov (1911-2004) was a Bulgarian public figure and mayor of Plovdiv in 1959-1963. Born in Karasule, Greece, his family moved to Bulgaria after the First World War, and from 1922 he lived in Plovdiv. In 1941, after the failure of the local RMS organization, he was arrested and imprisoned. After 9 September 1944 he was released, worked in the structure of the Ministry of Interior and completed party school. He was deputy minister of internal trade. After his mayoral term he worked in Vietnam in 1963-1965; later he was expelled from the party and rehabilitated.
