Biography

Dr Garabed Tomasyan (1935-2014) was a Bulgarian public figure and physician of Armenian origin, born in Plovdiv. He graduated from the Medical University in his native city, worked as a doctor in Momchilgrad and Krumovgrad, and returned to Plovdiv in 1967. From 1990 he chaired the temporary executive committee of Rodopi Municipality, and in 1991-1995 he was Plovdiv's first democratically elected mayor after 1989. Local obituaries connect his term with the beginning of restitution, key municipal regulations, waste-treatment technology at the Tsalapitsa landfill, and the first municipal dog shelter.
