Dzhumaya Mosque
One of the oldest Ottoman mosques in the Balkans, dated to 1363–1364 (Sultan Murad I). It has nine domes and a single minaret and stands beside the Ancient Stadium.

How to read this place
The Dzhumaya Mosque rises in the very heart of Plovdiv, on the Main Street and above the exposed sphendone of the ancient stadium. It is one of the oldest and largest Ottoman mosques in the Balkans.

Over an older church
The first mosque on the spot was raised soon after the Ottoman conquest of the city, on the site of the cathedral church of St Petka of Tarnovo. The present nine-domed building dates to the 15th century and is traditionally attributed to Sultan Murad II.

The prayer hall, about 33 by 27 m, is roofed by nine domes arranged in a three-by-three grid and carried on massive interior piers. A single minaret rises at the north-eastern corner of the facade. The wall paintings inside date from the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

The Dzhumaya Mosque is still an active place of worship. It stands on the pedestrian Main Street beside the square of the same name and, together with the stadium and the clock, forms one of the busiest ancient-Ottoman corners of the city.
