The quarter of crafts
The quarter has been a centre of craftsmen for more than five centuries; according to the travel notes of Evliya Çelebi, there were 880 shops here in the 17th century. The street names still preserve it — Zhelezarska (blacksmiths), Zlatarska (goldsmiths), Abadjiyska (clothiers), Kozhuharska (furriers) — by the craft concentrated on each. The name “Kapana” itself comes from its web of tangled streets.

Kapana's revival came with the “Plovdiv — European Capital of Culture” initiative. The municipality turned the long-neglected quarter into a true cultural hub and a district of the creative industries, full of galleries, studios and cafes.
