Markovo Tepe was one of Plovdiv's seven syenite hills, alongside Nebet, Dzhambaz, Taksim, Sahat, Dzhendem and Bunardzhik.

In the early 20th century the hill was destroyed, and the quarried stone was used to pave most of Plovdiv's streets. A photograph from 1955 shows a large water-filled pit in its place. It is the only one of the seven hills to disappear completely.

A shopping centre now stands where the hill once was — the Markovo Tepe Mall, opened in 2016, whose name keeps the memory of the lost rise.
