From Eumolpias to Philippopolis
The city grew from the Thracian settlement of Eumolpias on the hills. In 342 BC Philip II of Macedon took it and gave it the name Philippopolis.

Under the Romans the city was called Trimontium — “the three hills” — and became capital of the province of Thracia, with a forum, theatre, stadium and fortress walls. Today ancient Philippopolis lies beneath and amid modern Plovdiv.
