Dr. Panayot Kostov
Dr Panayot Kostov (1874-1951) was a Bulgarian physician and politician born in the Kastoria-area village of Smardesh; after the Russo-Turkish War his family moved to Plovdiv. He graduated in medicine in Moscow in 1900, practised as a doctor, worked with Macedonian refugee organizations, and served as a field doctor in the Balkan Wars and the First World War. As mayor in 1927-1928 he was elected after a political crisis in the municipal council; his term is associated with financial stabilization, higher spending on public health and public works, and the tender for Plovdiv electrification.
