The soldier on the hill
Alyosha is an 11-metre reinforced-concrete figure of a Soviet soldier on Bunardzhik Hill (the Hill of the Liberators). The monument was built in 1954–1957 and is dedicated to the Soviet dead of the Second World War.

The name is the affectionate diminutive of Aleksey; the figure is by tradition linked to the soldier Alexei Skurlatov and to the Soviet song “Alyosha.” The monument has survived several attempts to remove it.

The monument is reached by a stairway up Bunardzhik, and its terrace offers one of the widest panoramas of Plovdiv and the Thracian plain.
