The merchant from India

The house was built in 1834–1835 for Stepan Hindliyan — a prominent merchant and founder of one of the four wealthiest Armenian families in the city. His business regularly took him to India, the source of the nickname “Hindliyan.”

Murals and a marble bath

The master-decorators Moko and Mavrudi from Chirpan worked more than six months on the murals — pilasters, garlands of floral and geometric ornament, vignettes and landscapes of Constantinople, Venice and Stockholm. The house also keeps an alafranga niche, a marble fountain and its own bath.

A house-museum

Today the Hindliyan House is a museum linked to the neighbouring Balabanov House, and is one of the few houses in Plovdiv to retain its original symmetric plan.
