Hills, parks & river · half a day

The Rowing Canal and the Maritsa riverside

two kilometres of water, running lanes and a westside afternoon

The locals' favourite sporting afternoon: bus or taxi out to the Rowing Canal, a lap of the water on its alleys, then an easy return along the Maritsa's southern riverbank through Marasha to the Dondukova garden. Flat, green and blissfully free of must-see monuments.

Worth a detour

  • Green Bridge in Plovdiv

The Green Bridge over the Maritsa is steps from Marasha if you want a river view.

  • Dzhendem tepe

Combine with a Dzhendem tepe climb — the highest hill stands right between the canal and the centre.

Good to know

  • Water Long exposed stretches — water and a hat are mandatory in summer.
  • Food Only seasonal kiosks ring the canal; real food waits back in the centre.
  • Public transport Worn out? Boulevard buses run from the canal back to the centre in 10 minutes.

During regattas some canal-side alleys are fenced off for competitors.
