Smirnenski: hill to water

the university west, Dzhendem tepe and the Rowing Canal

A west-city quarter walk: from the Medical University campus — the quarter's student heart — up the trails of Dzhendem tepe (Youth Hill) and down to the Rowing Canal, where Smirnenski meets the water. One real climb, rewarded with the west's two best views.

When to go

Start 2–3 hours before sunset — the summit in golden hour, the water at dusk.

Getting to the start

The campus sits on Vasil Aprilov boulevard; Peshtersko Shose buses stop beside it.

After the finish

From the canal, ride a boulevard bus back or walk the riverside alley. Combine with "The tepeta and their sunsets" for the full hill day.

Good to know

  • Terrain The tepe's trails are rocky and slippery downhill — solid shoes.
  • Water Shops all but vanish past the university — carry water for the climb.

The tepe is protected ground — stay on the trails; after sunset descend by the lit alleys.
