How to read this place

The Church of Sts Constantine and Helena is among the oldest in Plovdiv, on the acropolis hill, its walls painted by the masters of the Samokov-Debar school.

On the acropolis hill

It is considered one of the oldest churches in the city — raised in 337 on the site of a pagan temple on one of the fortified hills. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times; the present building was constructed in 1832 with the help of local patriots.

The icons of Zahari Zograf

Its frescoes and icons are the work of masters from the renowned Debar iconographic school. Among them was Zahari Zograf, who worked in Plovdiv between 1836 and 1840 and created some of the church's icons and murals.
