Marasha
the garden quarter between two bridges
Between the Gerdzhika bridge and the Rowing Canal, from the Maritsa's south bank to the slopes of Bunardzhik and Sahat tepe, stretches Marasha — once a zone of market gardens and country estates. Its Revival-era Church of St George and school served as a centre of the church-national struggles and of Bulgarian schooling in the quarter.
What is not yet documented: Public documentation of Marasha is fragmentary — the dates here are few because the verifiable ones are few.
Where the name comes from
The name's origin is not firmly established in public sources; the quarter has carried it since at least the late 19th century.
Getting there
Start from Unification square or the Dondukova garden; the quarter is level and easy walking toward the Maritsa bank.
