Smirnenski

the western quarter between Dzhendem tepe and the Rowing Canal

Between the western slopes of Youth Hill, the Sofia railway line and the Rowing Canal parkland lies Hristo Smirnenski — a quarter of two building layers: the brick cooperatives of the 1950s–60s and the panel blocks of the 1960s–80s, divided by Tsarevets street.

What is not yet documented: The quarter's history is sparsely documented; only the planning facts found in public sources are noted here.

Why this quarter matters

Smirnenski is where postwar Plovdiv learned to live modern: 1950s brick cooperatives and 1970s panels split by a single street, with a university campus, the highest tepe and the rowing canal alongside. The city's west in one frame.

For the visitor
