the western quarter between Dzhendem tepe and the Rowing Canal

Between the western slopes of Youth Hill, the Sofia railway line and the Rowing Canal parkland lies Hristo Smirnenski — a quarter of two building layers: the brick cooperatives of the 1950s–60s and the panel blocks of the 1960s–80s, divided by Tsarevets street.

Where the name comes from

Named after the poet Hristo Smirnenski (1898–1923).

Getting there

By bus along Peshtersko Shose boulevard or on foot past the Rowing Canal; the ground is level.

  1. 1950s–60s

    The brick cooperatives

    The quarter's older half is built up with brick housing cooperatives west of Dzhendem tepe.

  2. 1960s–80s

    The panel half

    Past Tsarevets street rise the panel blocks of the newer half; to the north the quarter leans on the Rowing Canal parkland.

  3. today

    The quarter by the water

    The Otdih i Kultura park and the canal make Smirnenski Plovdiv's natural doorway to rowing water and running lanes.
