Nikola Chalakov

Nikola Georgakiev Chalkov (1856-1923) was a Bulgarian politician from the prominent Plovdiv Chalkov family. Born in Plovdiv, he graduated from Galatasaray High School and Robert College in Constantinople. After 1878 he worked as secretary of the Eastern Rumelia Regional Court, later serving as private secretary to Alexander Bogoridi and Gavril Krastevich. Chalkov was mayor of Plovdiv four times - in 1894, 1899, 1899-1900 and 1905-1906; in 1900, on his initiative, the city's first orphanage was created. He died in 1923 and was buried in Plovdiv's Holy Mother of God church.
